Collection of PROs – mobile phones provide high response rates

At present, patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are extensively collected using questionnaires completed on paper or web forms. However, for frequent data collection e.g. patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases such questionnaires are impractical.

In contrast, mobile phones are ideally suited for frequent data collection (always on and always with you). Checkout this paper for more details on an SMS based system.

Although an SMS based questionnaire has obvious limitations this study demonstrated that where frequent data collection and real-time assessments were required, mobiles could offer significant benefits including high response rates. A well designed app would not have the limitations associated with SMS but could still provide the benefits.
