NHS Pilots e-Consent Technology

In July the NHS began using tablet based Mytrus’ Enroll® in a clinical trial to give potential participants an overview that included simple, entertaining videos to reinforce key information. People read the informed consent document, answered questions to assess understanding and were prompted to review information they didn’t understand. Metrics also allowed staff to identify where patients might need further counselling with site staff before they felt comfortable agreeing to sign the consent.

An independent study of Enroll by the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute found that patients provided with paper-only consent were able to correctly answer 58 percent of questions asked on a follow-up questionnaire, whereas those who used an electronic consent application correctly answered 75 percent of the questions.
